Not every African wants to go to Europe!
Every African wants to go to Europe is the common public opinion in Europe. The young and energetic will rise to the opportunity of finding a better life in Europe or the United States.

But there are young people who choose differently. People who want all the benefits of a steady and fulfilling professional life, on the condition that they can achieve this at home. People who love their native country and who realize that happiness is not an easy commodity in an foreign land. Salah Salahina Sounfountera, living in Mali, is such a man.

Salah – an African toubab? is an intimate portrait of a young man struggling with his identity, we get to see a different picture of contemporary West-Africa.

Having made his decision to stay, and ambitious enough to build his own company in Africa, his daily reality is a hard one. As a tourist guide he has become a ‘modern man’, with western ideas who wants to take the best of both worlds, not realising that he will fall into the gap between two cultures. The question ‘Who am I?’ cuts to the core. His ideas conflict with the expectations of both his family and his wife. He is seen as a toubab, an outsider, a white man. He constantly needs to prove that he is still one of them, to demonstrate that he has not become godless. They have to see him praying. He has to prove that he is not selfish, that he still wants to help his relatives when he is able to.
But he opposes strongly to some of the ingrained customs and traditions that encourage dependence and inertia.

Why a film about a tourist guide?
In her previous film Nima Temba Sherpa, director Margriet Jansen has revealed that the personal background of a tourist guide can be of interest, provided that his story is well told. This film won the Audience Award at the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival of 2004.

The film Salah – an African toubab? will offer the viewer some surprising insights in “his” guide: to all appearances a “modern man”, in reality he is African to the core. A man who is determined to succeed in dirt-poor Mali, but also recognizes the demands of tradition and the customary duty to provide for the many, in the face of poverty and deprivation.

Niet elke Afrikaan wil naar Europa!
Het gangbare idee over Afrikanen is dat zij uiteindelijk allemaal naar Europa willen. De hele familie betaalt mee om energieke jongeren een kans te geven op een beter leven, en betere verdiensten in Europa of de Verenigde Staten.
Maar er zijn ook jongemannen die een andere keuze maken. Die ambitieus zijn, carrière willen maken en zich willen ontwikkelen, maar dan wel in eigen land. Die van hun land houden en zich realiseren dat je niet vanzelfsprekend gelukkiger bent in een rijk land, en een andere cultuur. Salah Salahina Sounfountera is zo iemand. Hij woont in Mali en heeft besloten daar zijn bestaan op te bouwen.

Eenmaal de beslissing genomen dat hij wil blijven, en met de ambitie een eigen bedrijf op te bouwen, blijkt de dagelijkse realiteit in Afrika zich niet zomaar aan te passen. Als een gids voor toeristen is Salah een ‘moderne’ man geworden met westerse ideeën. Hij wil het beste uit beide werelden behouden. Hij realiseert zich echter niet dat hij daardoor tussen twee culturen in dreigt te vallen. De vraag: wie ben ik? wordt relevant.

De film Salah – an African toubab? is een intiem portret van een jongeman die met zijn identiteit worstelt. De film geeft tevens een beeld van het eigentijdse West-Afrika.

Met haar voorlaatste film NIMA TEMBA SHERPA won Margriet Jansen de Audience Award op het Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival. Dit portret van een Nepalese Sherpa draaide in 2004 zeer succesvol in het toenmalige DocuZone programma in de Nederlandse filmhuizen en is internationaal goed verkocht.
De film Salah – an African toubab? is te beschouwen als een vervolg op Nima Temba Sherpa.

Salah – an African toubab? is een coproductie van Metropolisfilm en Margriet Jansen Producties, en met steun van het Thuiskopiefonds en de gemeente Utrecht tot stand gekomen. Het Nederlandse Fonds voor de Film heeft bijgedragen aan de research.

Vanaf 16 oktober 2008 is Salah - an African toubab? landelijk in de filmhuizen uitgebracht door Cinema Delicatessen.

• Wat een mooie inkijk in het leven van een Afrikaanse gids: zijn afwegingen, zijn ervaringen, zijn kijk op zijn privé-leven. Prachtig gefilmd, intense sfeerbeelden. We hebben genoten.

• Ik vond hem erg mooi, de sfeerbeelden, zeker van Djenné, maar ook de diverse personages. Wat een tweestrijd moet het telkens voor Salah zijn, het leven tussen 2 werelden.
• Het was heerlijk om door de film weer even terug te zijn in Mali.
• Prachtig maar ook confronterend omdat de problematiek zo goed in beeld werd gebracht
• Ik vond de film prachtig. Het thema kwam er goed uit, ik kreeg door de film ook echt respect voor Salah, ik denk dat het een zeer interessante film is voor alle mensen die op reis gaan naar Afrika (ook al is het niet Mali, het thema van de film is ook op andere landen te plakken). De Baobabs, Sawadees etc zouden deze film bij elke Afrika-reis moeten verkopen!
